My DOS program needs me to type Alt-P. How do I do that on XTM?There are some obvious restrictions mapping a PC keyboard of up to 102 keys onto the Nokia and Psion keyboard with only 53 keys. We put some extra keys as on-screen buttons, and try to use the main keyboard as labelled. An important PC key which is missing on the Symbian machines is the Alt key. We use the Fn/Chr key as an Alt key, but that only works for those keys which do not need to use it as an extra shift key. You can therefore only use Alt (=Fn) on the alphabetic keys toward the left of the keyboard. If you need to type an Alt + Key combination where this short cut is not available, XTM on a Psion Series 5 can simulate holding the Alt key down by first pressing Fn + Menu, which is labelled Dial, and then pressing the key or key combination. For example, on most Series 5 keyboards the letter P shares a key with the equals sign '=' which is typed as Fn + P. If you have a PC application that needs you to type Alt + P, you can't get that by typing Fn + P because that just gives an equals sign. Instead you can get Alt + P by pressing Fn + Menu and then pressing P. Sadly, there is no such spare key on a Nokia Communicator, and although we're trying to find a way to squeeze it in, some Alt + For other standard keys that are missing from the Psion keyboard (like the vertical bar symbol "|") you may hold down the Ctrl key, type the number corresponding to the character code ("|" is 124), and then release Ctrl - the selected character will be injected as if typed directly. Geofox users should find that all the keys work for them normally, since on a Geofox the Fn key is always available as Alt and the keyboard has all main PC keys.
