Family History Research
The main sources for Scottish family history research
are:-
- Post-1855 Statutory birth, marriage and
death records
- Pre-1855 church records
- Census records - 1841 to 1911
Using these sources we can usually trace the
average Scottish family back to the late 1700s. We can also trace
living relatives. There are many other sources we can use to
add to the basic information. These include:-
- Kirk Session Minutes
- Monumental Inscriptions
- Testaments (wills and inventories)
- Property and Court records
- Directories and Valuation Rolls
- Estate or Family Papers
- And many more
